All of Raquelitas Tortillas have gone green! DENVER, Co - November 1, 2007 - How can Raquelitas Tortillas be thrilled to announce that all of their tortillas have gone green? Because the "green" will be coming from wind power! As of November1, 2007, Raquelitas Tortillas, Colorado's premium tortilla manufacturer since 1960 is 100% Powered by Windsource from Xcel Energy, and in fact, the 2 wind farms are right here in Colorado. Since our humble beginnings we have always strived to be the innovators in our industry. We were Denver's first to utilize modern bakery machinery to manufacture high quality tortillas to keep the growing number of Mexican restaurant well stocked with consistent product. Now we are expanding our innovative lead yet again by putting our checkbook where our hearts are, by spending more for cleaner renewable energy to be better citizens environmentally and significantly lesson our carbon footprint by a reduction of approximately 58,000 lbs of Carbon Dioxide out of Denver's air that you and I breathe the first year alone! Why spend this extra money? Today it is impossible to ignore the potential threat to our delicate environment. Watching the news, reading newspapers, or listening to Al Gore (whether you love or dislike him), the environment is quickly becoming a very important issue close to people's hearts for good reason; we simply can't afford to be even a little wrong even if facts are blown out of proportion like the naysayers claim. Business has taught me that sometimes it is better to err on the side of over-cautiousness, than to completely ignore the possibility of something bad happening. Hey, don't overstaff yourself by a person or two on a Friday night and you will see what I mean! To be honest I am not going to tell you I am a "tree-hugger" thru and thru, but I must admit as I watch all the reports and news specials there must be something to all of this and as I look at my children and yours too, I have to be able to look them in the eye and tell them I am doing something to help stop, or at the very least minimize the potential harm we are all doing to our planet. I have been privileged to live most of my life here in Colorado and been exposed to much of her beauty, seeing my customers who have indeed become my friends. When I think of driving into Telluride on the San Juan Skyway, or cruising down Rabbit Ears Pass and seeing Lake Catamount below, or enjoying the majestic drive between Delta and Carbondale, the proud Mesa's of Grand Junction, the Maroon Bells outside of Aspen where you are convinced there much be a god, heck the list goes on and on, you see all of this and you know you must do something to save it for our kids and their kids to enjoy, just as I have. The bottom line is that Raquelitas Tortillas is willing to make a little less money to take action and do something to save it. We are trying to do our part to minimize the Greenhouse Effect, also referred to as global warming, which is generally believed to come from the buildup of carbon dioxide gas in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is a by-product of burning carbon based fuels like coal, gasoline and oil and measured amounts of carbon dioxide in the air are continuing to increase. This buildup acts like a blanket and traps heat close to the surface of our earth. Changes of even a few degrees will affect us all through changes in the climate and even the possibility that the polar ice caps may melt. Wind Generated electricity is just the latest in a string of changes we have taken in the past year as we began a comprehensive look at our own manufacturing plant and have taken serious actions to improve our positive impact on Colorado's environmental health. The result?
The thing is, many times, doing the right thing does in fact cost a little more, but that is a cost Raquelitas has always been willing to pay, whether in superior ingredients or being good citizens. After looking at the environmental data in regards to how much better for all of our Colorado neighbors, wind generated electricity was, it was clearly a no-brainer, in fact this may have been the quickest major buying decision we ever made. This decision also aligns our core environmental beliefs with our customers who include; Whole Foods Markets and Vail Resorts who operate four local ski resorts - Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge and Keystone - Colorado's 2 largest wind energy buyers! I think our stance on this also helps you take a step in this direction of being a good environmental citizen. By choosing us as your tortilla and chip supplier, you are in fact making a statement that you care about our environment and are taking action with every box of every order. I welcome your comments on our move in this direction and in fact we will do even more in the upcoming years to improve our lead on this important issue, and if in fact you are interested in doing something like this yourself, I can help you Sincerely, Rich Schneider |
